• Cheltenham Festival Quiz

Quiz now closed. Thank you. Answers below.

Winners - Rory Delargy, eminent racing journalist, broadcaster and winner of Racing Post Christmas Quiz joins log jam at the top with 19.5 correct answers alongside Howard James and Jonathan Bartley. Fourth with 19 is Jon Bentley. Fifth is Gary Wilson, Golf Prospect Guru with 17.5

Some one said to me that a quiz would be an easy thing to put in. Yes, would have been if I had really checked questions and answers. To save blushes, I am donating £10 to the Samaritans for each of Rory, Howard, Jonathan and Jon. You are all brave and close together. A big thank you to all entries for the effort and level of knowledge shown. (Even Robin, yes, that's Rith Dubh). Gary's just a smidge behind the leaders but since he and I are staying at the Evesham Hotel next week, I will give him the chance to berate me over a pint for not checking things properly. I know he will be gentle.

Rory Delargy wins the prize for best answer. No 21.

    Hope to return in 2018

    1. What is so special about Montelado's two Festival wins that is very unlikely to happen again?  Ans. Won consecutive races at Cheltenham Festival.  Too easy.
    2. In the 2014 Gold Cup how many horses did Lord Windermere pass from the bottom of the hill second time round to the winning post? Ans 7. See youtube
    3. Including his antepost columns Tom Segal as Pricewise gave 39 selections for the 2016 Festival.  What were the names of his two winners?  Superb Story at 10s and Diamond King who actually drifted on the day from recommended  10s to 12s
    4. In 1998 who was the first bookie to buy a pitch under the new rules paying £90k for number 2 in Tattersalls?  Freddie Williams
    5. Go to the Skybet Supreme Novices page on this site. There is a picture of two horses in the background. Name the one on the left?  Ballyandy contesting with Moon Racer at Perth.
    6. What did Ballyalton do at the 2016 Festival that hadn't been achieved since 2004?  Won a chase off the back of a fallAdios, St Pirran Grand Annual. '04. Popular answer Irish Cavalier and FingerOnThePulse both won as a maiden chasers since 2004.  Black Hercules backed Ballyalton up.  Stat really dead for a while.
    7. Aidan Coleman has ridden one Festival winner. The name? Kayf AramisNo one fell for Any Currency.  Aidan deserves a bit more luck.
    8. Which horse ran 7 times at the Festival between 2006 and 2013 being placed four times, including in three G1s?  This should have read three different G1s and then would have been Fair Along alone. However Albertas Run was placed in 4 G1s.  Should have remembered that as I backed him every year.  Both score.
    9. Go to the 4 mile National Hunt Chase page. In the picture, which future Gold Cup winning jockey is riding the one on the left?  Davy Russell and JT on two horses neither of which were keen on leading.
    10. Conor O Dwyer is revered for his winning Champion Hurdle rides on Hardy Eustace.  But which Festival 33/1 handicap shot has he always admitted ' was the one that got away ' that he should have ridden to victory?  Miltonfield. Conor went in, out, in out, shake it all about. In front two strides after the line. Talked about it years later in a Sunday Times interview. Seemed a lovely fellow. I was ashamed having called him those names.
    11. Which race in the 2016 Festival had seven runners that had all been pulled up on their previous run? Ah, now, yes, there were seven declared to run in the Mildmay, but Tenor Nirvernais didn't run which I didn't check.  You are all understanding people. Only 6 in Ultima.
    12. Of the first seven home in Coneygree's Gold Cup, On His Own in 5th was the only one not to have done what? All the other 6 had won last time out which doesn't happen that often in a GC. Popular answer Djakadam had yet to win a G1 at that stage.
    13. Between 2009 and 2014 which multiple Velka Pardubickas winning jockey rode at the Festival five times finishing outside the top 6 only once?  The great, the wonderful, Jan Faltejsek who I personally carried home at 100s on the machine to win a Cleeve on Knockara Beau. No mean horseman.
    14. What price was Brownes Gazette at the off in the 1985 Champion Hurdle just before Dermot Browne lost control of the reins? I gave the point for 4/6, though I remember getting and seeing only 8/13.  An early salutary lesson on money buying which, thankfully, has stayed with me.
    15. Quevega won the Mares Hurdle 6 times between 2009 and 2014.  Which horse is the only other one to have won 5 races at the Festival?  Golden Miller Too easy
    16. In 2008, the Festival lost a day due to high winds.  That day it was reported that another racecourse ran out of beer as people scrambled round for something to do.  Which course?  Huntingdon.  Emergency planning was needed there too that day.
    17. If you put all the Festival winners this century in alphabetical order, who would come first and who would come last? Ok. With the argument that A Genie In A Bottle appears in front of American in this year's 4 miler, then A New Story would be in front of Albertas Run.  And Zemsky.
    18. Ruby needs one for the full set of Festival G1s, Barry needs three. Name the races?  Ruby needs Albert Bartlett, Barry needs Supreme, Mares and JLT.  People knew that.
    19. Only two of the last 47 Festival days were run on ground officially softer than Good to Soft at the time of the first race.  Which horse won the Championship race in each of these two days?  I got this from Timeform but I must have picked it up wrong.  So Hurricane Fly, Bobs Worth, Coneygree, Sublimity I think, all scored.
    20. In the 2016 Festival how many losers did Willie Mullins's train between Yorkhill and Black Hercules?  Racing Post made the losing run on the Thursday 20 which must have counted those behind Yorkhill.
    21. Name the oldest Festival runner this century?  I had this as obviously Uncle Junior until two experts pointed out that A New Story was a month older in his last attempt at the Cross Country.  Then in comes Mr Delargy. He tells me that Newmill ran in the 2013 Charity Race when older still by another month.  A fantastic answer which I have finally verified.  He didn't get the point as A New Story had already been scored but take a bow, sir.
    22. In the two weeks before the 2016 Festival which horse did Noel Fehily decide not to ride at the Festival, much to the annoyance of the trainer? He got off Shantou Village (the fav) to ride Unowhatimeanharry in the Albert Bartlett.  A slightly frosty atmosphere at the Belfast Preview Night when Neil announced this but no mug, Noel.  Maybe Harry Fry made the call.
    23. Which Festival winner of the last decade started his career with a 20/1 win in a Folkestone maiden hurdle? The horse then remained unbeaten until his Festival win some 15 months later.  More Of That, JP owned even at that stage.  Folkestone's penultimate meeting which Steve and I attended.  Backed solely because he was the 20/1 third favourite of seven runners. AP on a 5/4 shot did look a touch embarrassed when Ritchie McClernon in green and gold strolled by.
    24. Which recent Festival winner was a beaten 6/4 favourite that season in a race at Down Royal? Tammys Hill, that fine interview on RUK when Lydia Hislop does not understand a word of what JJ Smyth is saying
    25. And finally, at which racecourse would you find the Montelado Bar?   Roscommon, Pat Flynn used to train nearby, bar in his honour

Wealth Warning. Any decisions made (or not) or the basis of any information in this site are the sole responsibility of the reader. There is no obligation on me to follow my own advice (Gary). The Stats Proverb says 'Relevance Is In The Eye Of The Beholder.' I take no responsibility for (but am keen to hear of) any factual errors. Previous years ‘stats on stats’ would suggest we may identify a decent priced winner from manageable groups every three or four races. I tend to improve as a tipster as the week goes on, possibly too concerned on the Tuesday. It is believed that Savello (2014 Grand Annual) took from Golden Chieftain (2013 3m hcap chase) the record for breaking the most stats in a race. Stands now at 8. Cole Harden equalised with 8 in the 2015 World Hurdle. Remember, after you have cursed/laughed at me and given up totally on trends, they will come back to bite. Always happens. Usually on Gold Cup Day
